About
Connecting the UK to the world and the world to the UK
Mission
We create international opportunities for the people of the UK and other countries and build trust between them worldwide.
Description
Celebrating 75 years in 2009, the British Council is the UK’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations.
We work in over 100 countries worldwide to build engagement and trust for the UK through the exchange of knowledge and ideas. We work in the arts, education, science, sport and governance and last year we engaged face to face with 13.2 million people and reached 221 million. We are a non-political charitable organisation.
General Information
Founded in 1934, The British Council opened its first overseas office in Egypt back in 1938.
Since then, our work has aimed to build and develop long-term relationships with governments, organisations and people to provide mutual benefit. All our work is concerned with people and involves quality and customer care.
We believe that connecting young people across cultures creates genuine mutual trust and understanding. Learning from one another and working together helps us all build secure, more prosperous and sustainable futures.
