10 Ways Leaders Need to Manage Themselves
As a leader, you are expected to model appropriate responses to change on behalf of your organization. Your employees look to you to see your reaction to workplace change. Because of this, you need to be keenly aware that your actions, attitudes, and reactions shape the way your employees will consume and then act on change in the workplace. Here are 10 ways to manage yourself during a time of organizational change.
- Avoid Negative Self-Talk – Rephrase thoughts of resentment or fear into thoughts of individual growth and opportunity.
- Be Open – You may have concerns. It is important to allow others to understand your frame of mind.
- Be Realistic – Change isn't always easy. There are always going to be some challenges of successfully coping with change.
- Gather Information – Ask questions and do research. Be as informed about the change as possible.
- Be Productive – Be as productive as you can in your current role. Focus on organizational and record-keeping tasks so that you are prepared to hand off current responsibilities to someone else. Be ready to demonstrate your competence.
- Accept New Ideas – Give new ideas a chance. Don't form quick judgments on new relationships. Keep an open mind.
- Manage Your Stress – Practice effective stress-management strategies.
- Upgrade Your Knowledge – Make sure to keep your knowledge and skills up to date where necessary in order to continue to be seen as a valuable, flexible team member.
- Use Resources – Consider contacting your organization's resources such as counselors and mentors.
- Be a Leader – Work on being a leader in embracing and facilitating change.
